Matter, explained — and what it means for your house

Matter is a common language that lets devices from different manufacturers work in Apple Home, Google Home and Alexa without a separate bridge for each. In 2026 it does that reliably for lights, plugs, sensors, locks and blinds — and still not for cameras, complex thermostats or anything with an unusual feature set.
The problem it was built to solve
Before Matter, every manufacturer spoke its own dialect. You bought Philips lights and got a Philips bridge; you added Aqara sensors and got an Aqara hub; each came with an app and a cloud account. A villa would accumulate five hubs in a cupboard and eleven apps on a phone, and that is precisely the mess I'm called in to unwind.
Matter is an agreed vocabulary. A Matter light describes itself as a light — brightness, colour temperature, on and off — and any Matter controller understands it without a translator.
Matter and Thread are not the same thing
This confuses almost everyone, and the distinction matters when you're buying.
Thread is the radio: a low-power mesh where every mains-powered device relays for its neighbours. That property is why it works in stone houses where ordinary Wi-Fi devices don't.
Matter is the language spoken over it. Matter can also run over Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
For a Mallorcan property you want both: Matter for compatibility, Thread for the physics.
What works well in 2026

The trap. Matter describes a device by its category. Anything a manufacturer does that's cleverer than the category loses its cleverness. A high-end ducted air conditioner exposed over Matter often becomes a plain thermostat. That's why serious climate and lighting still run on KNX or Lutron underneath, with Matter used where it excels.
Should it change what you buy?
For a retrofit, enormously — Matter and Thread are what make retrofitting a stone house credible rather than a compromise, and I'd now specify Thread devices over proprietary radio in almost every case.
For a new build, hardly at all. The backbone should still be wired KNX or Lutron for the reasons that have nothing to do with protocols: reliability at density, longevity, and independence from any one manufacturer. Matter fills the gaps around the edges.
The one rule I'd hold to either way: buy Thread-capable devices even where you don't need them yet. The mesh gets stronger with every mains-powered node, and in a house with thick walls that compounds.

Does Matter replace KNX?
No. Matter is a compatibility layer for consumer devices; KNX is a wired control bus for switching real loads at scale. In a large villa the backbone stays wired and Matter fills in around it.
Do Matter cameras work with Apple Home yet?
Not meaningfully. Cameras remain outside what Matter handles well, so use HomeKit Secure Video or a local NVR bridged in through Home Assistant instead.
